Nirvaer Executive Director/Vice President, AEJ One Delta Sales Securities division, Mumbai

Across the firm you see young people in positions that involve a tremendous amount of responsibility. Individuals are constantly being asked to take on challenging tasks.

My Work

I am a Vice President in the Investment Banking Division in Mumbai. This involves helping clients raise capital and giving them advice on mergers, acquisitions or divestitures. My responsibilities include running various analyses, liaising with lawyers and accountants, and helping come up with unique ideas that can help the firm’s clients achieve their objectives.

The most interesting element for me is having a first-hand view of the exciting changes occurring in the Indian economy today.

A large majority of my work is team based. Although I may work on certain elements of a client engagement individually, this is still done as part of a broader team effort. The teams I have worked on so far have ranged from 3 to 12 people.

My Day

I am currently working on an assignment to help one of our International clients invest in an Indian company. Working in an environment as dynamic as India is today is certainly rewarding. It is also great to work with extremely talented individuals on a daily basis.

My Path

I joined Goldman Sachs via a combination of campus recruiting and a recommendation by a friend. Goldman Sachs was the only investment bank I interviewed with.

The firm stresses the importance of maintaining a single culture across its offices, and this was evident in Mumbai also. I was also impressed with the caliber of people working here.

Myself

I definitely expected to have a career in finance. I cannot say that I expected with any certainty to work in investment banking or with Goldman Sachs.

I would advise those who are interested in pursuing a career in finance to make sure you enjoy it and that you find it interesting. And be ready to work hard – everyone in this field does.
