It was important for me to find an opportunity that offered an array of possibilities over the long term. When searching for developer positions, my criteria were that they had to be broad in scope, and allow for flexibility within the role. I wanted to work at a company where I would have the opportunity to change roles and develop skills in a variety of domains. Goldman Sachs not only offered the breadth of engineering roles, but also had the culture of mobility that I desired.

As an engineer, I’m excited by difficult problems. I spend my time working with and building platform technologies that solve common problems faced by many business-facing teams. This allows them to build software faster and be more agile.

My team designs and creates Software Development Life Cycle products from the ground up. As an analyst in the Development Practices team within the Technology Division, I am currently working on an automated remote testing framework for one of the core platforms at the firm. The firm’s diverse business requirements mean that we cannot simply use an out-of-the-box solution. Instead, we are asked to create, design and implement solutions from the ground up. I have never before had a chance to design software with such high requirements for robustness and scale, which I find both challenging and fun.

I am fulfilled by the process of working as a team, combining creativity and technical skills, and collectively building and delivering a solution. I have learned that ability and willingness determines how much responsibility you are given here, not necessarily whether you are senior or junior. The hierarchy is flat – senior people enjoy working with those more junior and will listen to their ideas.

At the firm, I am involved in groups and committees outside my work as a developer. For example, I am part of the New Analyst and Intern Committee, where I organize training and support initiatives for interns and new graduates. I also had the chance to be part of a group that helped validate design concepts for the new London office, which was really interesting!

There is a misconception about engineering in financial services firms. Some recruits assume it involves either supporting legacy systems or crunching numbers in spreadsheets all day. In my experience, there is a lot of opportunity to be at the forefront of new technologies and participate across many different areas. My advice to campus recruits is to keep an open mind and to talk to as many people as they can. An open mind and outgoing disposition will allow you to discover opportunities that you may not have previously considered.

Outside of work, I like to spend my time reading, cooking and rock climbing. Of late, I have found myself enjoying books and articles on culinary history – it is a nice intersection of my hobbies!
