How we work

Goldman Sachs Technology is responsible for full life-cycle systems implementation through our worldwide operations. Our frontline technology business units are aligned to specific client businesses—sales and trading, banking, investment management and investment research—as well as firmwide operations such as legal, compliance, controllers and human capital management.

All of our technology solutions are built on a rich collection of enterprise and client platforms that unify and standardize our approaches to development, testing, workflow, user interfaces, the Web and more. At the core of our organization, infrastructure engineers design scalable hardware solutions to ensure we can meet the needs of our business, worldwide, 24X7.

We typically work in small to mid-sized teams, often globally distributed, focusing on specific business needs. New hires and senior technologists work together in a flat structure where “the best idea wins.” Individual initiative is encouraged, and it is not uncommon for junior technologists to be given broad responsibilities.

Asset Management Technology

The Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) business supports a set of global institutional and high net worth investors who wish to follow investment strategies that carefully balance risk and return.

GSAM Technology is directly aligned to the business, working on a variety of software engineering problems that range in duration from hours to years. It is a fast-paced environment, adapting to market and customer needs to create software that is robust enough to cater to an ever-changing business environment. GSAM Technology utilizes an array of different technologies with increasing development focus on open source and Linux-based technologies.

Trading and Portfolio Management is responsible for building trading tools and developing automation that allow the business to construct portfolios and manage risk. Technologists are aligned to provide the support needed to service our clients. GSAM trading desks are broken into the following groups: Quantitative Equities, Quantitative Strategies, Active Equity, Fixed Income and Money Markets, and Goldman Sachs Investment Strategies (Liberty Harbor and Investment Partners).

Alternative Investments Technology works closely with the businesses in GSAM dedicated to the third-party alternative investments offering. The technologists work on software tools supporting such functions as portfolio construction, risk monitoring and reporting, as well as the automation of a variety of business processes. Alternative Investments Technology is comprised of the following groups: Private Equity Group (PEG), Hedge Fund Strategies (HFS), Global Manager Strategies (GMS) and Alternative Investment Client Experience (AICE).

Funds Distribution is responsible for the support and development of the Global Cash Services internet platform. This is a suite of systems that allows our clients to execute trades electronically in GSAM and other providers’ funds. This electronic trading system provides clients with a streamlined cash management solution and can serve as a single online centre for trading, reporting and research needs.

Client Reporting, Marketing and E-Commerce supports Operations, Client Service, Marketing, BDS, Product teams and E-Commerce applications in GSAM. The applications in this space are used to produce various client materials for institutional clients and marketing materials to facilitate the sales and marketing efforts across institutional and third party/mutual fund products. The team also supports both client and public web sites for GSAM.

Sales supports the Sales, Client Services, Operations, Sales Attribution, Marketing and Product Management teams by facilitating the sales effort across the institutional and third party distribution channels. We help manage client relationships and track GSAM product sales, enabling such functions as wholesaler compensation, sales reporting and management reporting.

Operations and Core Data supports the operations workflow, including trades management, portfolio accounting, product pricing, billing, and reconciliation for hedge/mutual funds and separate accounts managed by GSAM portfolio managers.

Compliance develops and supports systems that enable compliance officers to monitor GSAM's interaction with client specified guidelines and regulatory requirements for both clients and GSAM employee holdings and transactions.

Performance supports flexible performance and risk calculations for all GSAM-managed investments. It also maintains fund treasury processes that provide service and control related to the development, launch and financial oversight of the division’s pooled investment products, such as hedge/mutual funds, consistent with Goldman’s business principles.

Equity Trading Technology

Equity Trading Technology builds software to support the firm’s trading businesses and constructs a vision for how technology should be used to solve trading problems.

Equities Trading Technology is comprised of the following departments:

Shares Technology develops and supports trading systems for the Listed and OTC single shares trading desks, which are comprised of agency and market-making activity.

Equity Derivatives Trading assists in facilitating clients, making markets and taking views on volatility that underlie equity cash securities. This department also provides access to various options markets, facilitating orders and creating customized hedging and risk-taking solutions.

Algorithmic Trading designs and administers automated execution strategies used by internal equity businesses, as well as external clients such as fund managers and hedge funds.

Equity Capital Markets develops the technology for equity financing activities, including the handling of IPOs, secondary offerings and block trades that use common stock, preferred stock, convertible and derivative products.

Electronic Transaction Services serves as the premier electronic trading platform, offering destination-neutral access to all major pools of liquidity for equities, options and electronic futures.
Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Trading/Equities Derivatives Technology

Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Trading and Equities Derivatives Technology support the technology needs of the firm as it builds an integrated sales and trading desktop and service-side architecture to be used across product lines and divisions.

The primary responsibilities of each group involve:

  • Providing trade entry and position management functionality to mainly
    traders and operations

  • Processing trades and providing real-time trade reporting and batch feeds
    for the settlement and clearance of trades

  • Creating integrated solutions for trade positions, profit and loss statements
    and risk management

These two groups are comprised of the following departments:

Global Trading System globally supports interest rate products and credit desks by developing applications that support fixed income products such as US Treasuries, US and International Government Bonds, and Emerging Market Bonds and Futures.

Global Repo Systems supports firm financing, sales and trading and collateral management of fixed income, equities and loan instruments.

Mortgage Trading Systems supports Agency and Non Agency Mortgages and loan businesses by managing critical pool allocation flows.

Money Markets Trading Technology builds and maintains money market trading and sales technology that supports sales and trade entry, position management and electronic trading for all money market products.

Electronic Trading and Core Services provides technology to manage the electronic trading needs of various business-facing application groups. The team also supports various offering and execution models to communicate with external vendors across product lines.

Interest Rate Products supports highly complex trades that can take anywhere from a day to two months to complete.

Credit Products provides a highly robust and scalable system to support thousands of credit-linked derivatives trades a day, swiftly and without error.

Currencies Technology provides high pricing availability and integrity to allow for our strategies to be confidently placed into the market.

Commodities supports the firm’s trading of a wide range of commodities, including electricity, natural gas, oil, metals, freight, plastics, pulp and paper, in both physical and derivative form.

Firmwide Systems

Firmwide Systems focuses on finding appropriate technology solutions across our businesses, recommending architectural strategies and introducing new technologies through both proof of concepts and real world development scenarios.

The following is a description of the departments that make up Firmwide Systems:

Compliance Technology. The Global Compliance Division is responsible for tracking, monitoring, policing and surveillance activities at the firm and its affiliates to ensure we comply with the regulations which govern our businesses globally. The Firmwide Compliance Technology Group works closely with all Compliance departments and other IT and business groups throughout the firm to develop and maintain a number of highly complex systems. Examples of these systems include analytical surveillances for market manipulation, short selling, front-running, MNPI and suspicious activity and encryption software for control room and the publishing of trading restrictions across the firm.

Controllers Technology is responsible for providing the firm’s Financial Controllers with the tools necessary to ensure completeness and accuracy of the firm’s books and records, to calculate and report profit and loss to both our businesses and senior management on a daily basis, to ensure the firm’s regulatory compliance in the different countries in which we operate and to issue public financial statements on a quarterly basis. While contending with extremely high volumes in transactions and positions, our applications must meet demanding performance and availability requirements.

Cross Divisional Projects & Architecture (XDiv) supports significant global and regional business change and technology implementation projects across multiple divisions: FICC, Equities, IMD and firmwide. We work closely with business units and their associated support functions such as Technology, Operations, Controllers, Compliance and Corporate Treasury. The team is responsible for helping the firm understand the business and technology impact of projects, progressing the firm's strategic functional architecture goals and successful project delivery with a strong focus on project and risk management, business analysis and integration/user acceptance testing. The team engages in projects that involve real risk to the firm and covers new business initiatives, architecture migrations, efficiency and control and regulatory related projects and initiatives.

Firmwide Services Technology provides solutions for the business functions that are essential to operate a multinational organization, protect its assets and support its globally diverse and growing population.

Risk Technology works with the cross-business risk management user groups in Goldman Sachs – Market Risk Management and Analysis, Credit Risk Management and Analysis and the Control Risk areas (OpRisk / MCD / Sox) – to build the tools and infrastructure used to measure, analyze and manage key risks, principally in the firm's trading and asset management businesses. These systems typically rely on quantitative models to estimate losses and other outcomes in the presence of uncertainty (for example, about market moves or payment defaults).They also rely on architectural features necessary for managing extremely large data sets and computations. In addition to being important inputs for senior management, the risk measures produced are also key inputs in determining the firm's regulatory capital reserve.

Global Distribution Technology

Global Distribution Technology supports all products across the fixed income, equities, derivatives and securities desks with applications that support the business through all phases of a trade, starting with the generation of trade ideas and quotes to post-execution service.

With an emphasis on customer service, the team’s responsibilities include:

  • Developing systems that track client interactions, preferences, potential
    transactions and information flows

  • Supporting clients by allocating settled trades across multiple customer
    accounts and providing pricing of clients' portfolios

Global Distribution Technology is comprised of the following departments:

Sales Capture builds sales desktop applications to enable voice dialog with trading, monitor order routing and electronic executions, and manage order status communications between client and trading desks.

Client Portfolio develops systems to retain customer valuation records, perform price verification, and provide report archiving capability for the pricing of clients' portfolios.

Merchandising provides functionality for marketing client ideas based on knowledge of client holdings, risk, preferences, corporate structure and the impact of economic events and news.

Client Relationship Management builds applications to monitor client relationships by capturing records of client on-site visits, conversations, action items and referrals between parties managing deals or relationships.

Client and Sales Metrics focuses on data warehousing client cost and revenue data. The team provides Sales with comprehensive reviews of client information, including revenue stream, hit ratio, relative rankings as per external surveys, sales profit and loss analysis and sales projections.

Client Reference Data provides tools for referencing client data such as client contacts, account information, sales coverage and organizational charts. This team also has responsibility for supervisory tools and functionality in support of compliance initiatives.

Institutional Portal offers external clients and internal sales people access to our content and services and works closely with the sales management and strategy group to deliver analytic tools for clients.

Firmwide Internet Group manages Web and security engineering, and provides infrastructure to support the development of Web-based and Java-based applications to internal and external clients.

Sales Core owns development, architecture and factoring services common across Global Sales application groups. Core services include security systems, visibility, cache management, content matching and subscriptions.

Capital Markets builds applications for the execution of IPOs, follow-on transactions, document management, Private Equity and Bond transactions. The group also provides the firm with reports and analytical tools.

Global Securities Services Technology

Global Securities Services provides clearance, financing, custody, short coverage and reporting services to hedge funds and institutional clients.

In addition to these core services, the group offers the following value-added solutions: capital introduction, startup and consulting services and system integration. Global Securities Services fulfills its mission by:

  • Providing hedge funds with all the tools and services to run their

  • Meeting the demands high trading volumes create for new technology

  • Developing and supporting applications used for trade processing,
    custody services, reporting, portfolio accounting, performance tracking,
    trading and credit risk analysis

  • Providing direct external client support

Global Securities Services Technology is comprised of five departments:

Prime Brokerage captures and process all client trades, payments and journals. The team designs and develops several core Web-based and Excel-based tools that are used by clients’ portfolio/risk/operations manager. It is also responsible for the automated delivery of custody, portfolio accounting, and performance and risk reporting to our clients in multiple time zones.

Securities Lending automates securities lending trading and middle-office decision and workflow processes, development of risk management tools, system scalability to support high transaction volumes, and expansion of the platform to include new products and markets. The group also develops and maintains e-commerce applications on both supply and demand sides of the business.

Futures develops trading, trade processing and clearing systems used internally as well as by external clients. Functional areas covered by these systems include trading and order management, trade booking and allocation services, trade matching and clearing, and trade processing.

Goldman Sachs Execution and Clearance supports a full brokerage platform for broker-dealers with proprietary businesses and hedge funds, including applications for trade processing, position and balance, margin, asset servicing, fund transfer, and financial and regulatory reporting.

Global Securities Services Risk IT is responsible for risk and margin financing technology used by the Global Securities Services business. The group provides risk management tools and reports to internal Global Securities Services management and external Hedge Fund clients. It also implements and supports various risk methodologies across broad asset classes, providing insights to risk managers and the appropriate leverage to our external clients.

Investment and Merchant Banking Technology

Banking Technology uses a combination of commercial packages and internally developed products to support our Investment Banking and Merchant Banking divisions.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing relationship management, project management, business
    analysis, application development, framework development, future
    application strategy and overall application architecture

  • Liaising with clients and vendors

  • Designing and implementing front-to-back applications

Microsoft's .Net platform focusing on ASP.Net, C#, and SQL-Server are all technologies used within Banking Technology. Our project lifecycle is driven by an agile iterative development methodology working with end-users throughout. Object oriented techniques for design and programming are stressed throughout the application lifecycle and reuse and enhancement of existing components is encouraged.

Banking Technology is comprised of the following 4 groups:

Banking Desktop provides bankers with solutions to manage client relationships, deal workflow, document management and financial analysis. The team works directly with the main Investment Banking population and develops applications to enhance their productivity.

Financial Applications provides a comprehensive suite of solutions and tools used for managing the Investment Banking and Merchant Banking divisions' operating performance. The team works with leadership, senior bankers and divisional CFO's to ensure that information is available for strategic decisions and that organizational processes are efficient and meet the needs of the division.

Core Services is responsible for common services used by all applications developed for Investment Banking and Merchant Banking divisions. These services include application frameworks and components, enterprise market data, application infrastructure, enterprise search and development tools.

Merchant Bank provides solutions to assist the private equity investor and investment management workflows. These include investor prospecting and administration and investment portfolio administration.

Investment Research Technology

Investment Research Technology builds the software that enables the Global Investment Research team to perform fundamental analysis of individual companies, sectors and entire economies.

The group also supports the production of macroeconomic forecasts, reports on companies and industries, investment opinions on individual securities, strategic portfolio management recommendations and a wide range of data products for the firm's investing clients and the firm's own traders and salespeople. Projects include:

  • Developing analytical tools for financial modeling and sophisticated stock screening

  • Generating custom document management solutions to create,
    publish and archive the firm's research content

  • Building a Web site for our clients, featuring a library of our publications
    and tools for working with the data produced by Global Investment Research

  • Developing and maintaining distribution systems for transmitting our
    research to clients inside and outside the firm

Creating reporting systems for monitoring and improving client service and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Investment Research Technology is comprised of the following groups:

Publishing designs and develops analyst-facing authoring tools and workflow. This includes Word and PowerPoint templates for the creation of written content and generation of renditions from said content.

Numbers delivers the centralized global strategy for the capture and processing of Investment Research financial data. This includes financial analysis tools integrated into the analyst desktop via .NET, integration with our core J2EE workflow systems and leverage of the strategic GS SecDB platform both for the benefit of Global Investment Research (GIR) and the distribution of our numbers firmwide.

Content Management Group Applications provides software solutions to centralize, streamline and expedite content management tasks. The group develops and maintains applications and tools for document and referential data workflow management and compendium authoring and generation.

Distribution is responsible for re-engineering the distribution platform in GIR. This includes all the data and document feeds that are sent out to various aggregators such as Bloomberg and Reuters. The team leverages new technologies on the internet to increase the marketability, presence and visibility of GIR, such as podcasts and RSS channels.

Legal provides software tools for generating disclosures and disclaimers to meet regulatory requirements for investment research publications.

Management Information Systems provisions analytical tools and operational reports for GIR management and its business unit leaders.

Core oversees data architecture, software development and deployment procedures, quality assurance, project management and division-wide technical concerns, such as security, performance and scalability. The group is also responsible for the software that manages, analyzes and retrieves the financial data produced by GIR analysts.

Operations Technology

Operations Technology enables the firm and our clients to transact in all major markets and securities types, efficiently and accurately, while complying with all internal and external control requirements.

Utilizing a variety of technology platforms, the teams work with technical challenges such as interfacing with external bodies across the globe, processing complex real-time messaging flows, working with large databases handling millions of updates per day and working in collaboration with technology teams in all areas of the firm.

The following is a description of the departments that make up Operations Technology:

Derivatives Operations Technology is divided into 3 areas: trades processing, settlements and confirmations. We build the systems that support the firm’s OTC derivatives flows. Primary business lines include Credit, Interest rates, Foreign Exchange, Commodities, Bank Loans, and Mortgages. This growing area is working on making their systems scalable enough to handle tripling of volumes. There is also increased pressure in the derivatives industry to standardize and create common platforms to confirm and settle trades. Our platforms are also investing in workflow and consolidated desktop functionality, bringing together the Operations business across many regions and products.

Middle Office Technology is responsible for transaction processing from when the order is complete to pre-settlement. This involves calculation of final monies and agreement with the counterparty using industry matching utilities. This includes all trades done on exchanges and with brokers as well as trades with our clients. Ever increasing volumes drive the need to design systems that scale to handling millions of transactions a day and dealing with the complexity of different business practices in markets globally.

Securities Clearance Technology enables operations to monitor all aspects of the clearance and settlement process. The factory serves as a gateway between the middle office and back office by receiving real-time trades from various front-end systems and sending instructions to external clearing agents to ensure that securities wind up in the appropriate ownership at the right time. Once a trade is settled, the factory sends postings downstream to the firm’s books and records. The factories predominately clear both fixed income and equity securities, but in some markets, the factories will handle warrants, ETFs and options. Over time, our applications have to adapt to increasing trade volumes, market-specific behaviors, and industry changes. For instance, the US Shares factory alone has an average daily volume in excess of 1 million and globally the factories also service over 200 external clearing agents.

Custody and Control has the responsibility for the firm’s books and records. This includes keeping track of the firm’s positions, ensuring that the firm’s position and transaction records are accurate, making sure that both the firm and our clients are in compliance with all regulatory requirements, and maintaining both the firm’s and our clients’ positions in light of corporate actions or other market events. Additionally, they are responsible for generating clients’ monthly statements as well as their yearly tax forms.

Client Services Workstation is the firms Customer Sub ledger for Institutional and Prime Brokerage Clients, supporting all product lines within Equities and Fixed Income for both securities and derivatives products. The functions performed by CSW include customer cash balance and position keeping, statements, interest calculations, ledger reconciliation, exception and payment processing. Since CSW is the official 'books and records' for client accounts, it is the source of data for many other systems in the firm.

Treasury Operations Technology supports Goldman Sachs Treasury Operations Department whose primary functions include the following:

Reconciliations - To reconcile all cash accounts in the quickest, most accurate and most automated manner possible

Cash Management - Forecast the firm’s daily cash requirements; Maintain sufficient liquidity; Maximize the firm’s cash investment potential and Minimize risk

Investigations - Investigate queries resulting from failed cash transactions, pursue compensation from counterparts for interest claims on late payments and act as contact point for claims against the firm; Amend and cancel payments;

Process Control Group - To provide the final checkpoint for financial and regulatory control, providing audit controls in preventing payments to names appearing on OFAC lists or clients that are a Credit risk.

Compliance Operations Technology is responsible for the design, development and maintenance of systems that ensure that Goldman Sachs is in compliance with over 40 regulatory agencies around the world in terms of transaction reporting, beneficial ownership, fee remittance, confirm production, trade processing and exception management. Our systems allow the firm not only to adhere to current regulations, but to respond in a timely fashion to regulatory changes and new business opportunities. Quality is key, for at stake is the firm’s reputation and ability to continue to operate or expand in a region.

Reference Data is responsible for the development of technology to provide the Firm with the product, pricing, and client reference data required to support all businesses, across all functions. We support the sourcing and consolidation of information from many sources. Our current focus is the design and build out of the new Common Reference Data Architecture, which will provide a framework supporting real-time notification, instrumentation, workflow, and an optimized approach for processing, with tight integration within the Operations Desktop. In addition, this area is engaged in the development of technology to support the Client On boarding initiative, which will reengineer our approach to bringing new clients into GS, as well as expanding the scope of business they can engage in with GS. The technologies this area will be levering will include .NET, workflow / business process management, document bar-coding and scanning, the Institutional Portal, CRM, and digital rights management.

Private Wealth Management Technology

Our Private Wealth Management Technology partners with the Private Wealth Management business to create technical solutions that provide clients with a level of investment research, trading execution and personalized wealth services that most firms afford only to their institutional investors.

Private Wealth Management Technology is comprised of the following application development teams:

Sales Technology builds and supports applications that help the Private Wealth Advisors effectively manage the clients before, during and after the sale. It covers investment management tools, client web and investment research portal.

Trading Technology provides a wide array of tools to manage, execute and book orders for various financial products such as equities, options, fixed income, structured notes, foreign exchange, mutual funds, IPOs, hedge funds, private equity, derivatives and cash equivalents.

Core Custody builds and maintains applications that provide the core custody functions, including bookkeeping, asset servicing, margin calculations, asset transfer and cash management.

Middle Office Tools builds applications that facilitate the front office and operations staff to perform various account maintenance functions, such as initiating wire transfers, approval of payments and managing of business exceptions using workflow tools.

Core Accounting builds and maintains systems that provide portfolio valuation functions including tax-lot generation, using various depletion algorithms, gain/loss calculations, accretion amortization and yield calculations, calculations of investment returns on various asset classes and comparison to benchmarks.

Reporting designs and maintains report-friendly databases containing all client investment data, and generates client reports including e-confirms and monthly statements.

Private Banking develops and supports online banking functions, such as bank depository accounts, automatic bill pay, ACH transfers, direct deposits, checking, debit and charge cards, loans and mortgages.

Compliance supplies the necessary tools to monitor all Private Wealth Management business activity, addressing both regulatory and internal requirements.

Financial Systems provides timely and accurate financial information used to manage the Private Wealth Management business, bill clients, post revenues and compensate sales teams.

Referential Data builds systems that maintain various reference data elements, accounts and client information, product information, prices and exchange rates as well as financial and holiday calendars.

Core and Infrastructure designs, develops and implements infrastructure for complex database systems, middle tier and front-end apps. It is responsible for system stability, scalability, performance and architecture.

Technology Infrastructure

Global Services implements and manages the firm’s technology infrastructure, operational footprint, and infrastructure operating risk, as well as providing support services for all users within the firm. It consists of four teams: Client Services, Services Engineering; Technology Services Operations and Production Control

Workplace Engineering enables our business community by providing workplace solutions that fit requirements of productivity and usability, while enforcing risk control and regulations.

Applications & Systems Infrastructure provides solution development across a broad suite of products and services, with a dedicated team of technologists facing off to application development and business teams to partner in performance engineering, testing, integrating and differentiating the firm’s technology solutions.
