Getting Started at Goldman Sachs

When I started at Goldman Sachs, I was very intimidated because I felt like I did not know anything and could not contribute as much as others around me. So whenever my team needed a volunteer to take the lead on a task, I would jump at the opportunity. It did not matter to me if the work was completely unrelated to my role, because I knew that it was something I was capable of doing and contributing to my team. My willingness to do the “small things” has helped me build relationships, taught me how to be resourceful and allowed me to gain the trust of my managers and colleagues.

Mentorship

Having a mentor has been instrumental in developing my career at Goldman Sachs. The mentor/mentee relationship provides me with a forum where I feel comfortable asking questions and seeking career advice. It’s reassuring to have someone at the firm who can share her experiences and provide advice. Also, mentors have the ability to provide you with a perspective that you could sometimes overlook, especially in times of adversity.

My mentor has been the most influential person in my career. She has taught me to always accept challenges, even when they are intimidating, because hard work and dedication will always lead to success.

Working with Clients

When solving business problems for clients, it is important that they know their problems are your priority. In my experiences, listening to the clients’ problems and explaining the solutions and options available to them provides transparency into the process. At the end of the conversation, it is important that the clients know they are being taken care of and the issue is being resolved.

Affinity Networks

I am part of the Salt Lake City Women’s Network and the People Development Committee Junior Advisory Board. Being part of these groups has given me the opportunity to meet and work with individuals of all backgrounds and roles within the firm. The networks provide the opportunity for employees in various stages of their careers to interact in a more casual setting. This invites the more junior people in the firm, like myself, to expand their networks and build relationships.
