I have always found people on my team who have the experience that can help guide me through whatever new project I may be working on.
I joined Goldman Sachs in the Operations Division from another financial firm and my job was to help onboard Investment Banking clients. After four years in Operations, I was able to leverage my knowledge of investment banking and move into the position I am in now in Global Compliance. My role is to help the firm reduce risk—financial, regulatory and reputational.
In Global Compliance, I work in the Electronic Communications Compliance group covering the Investment Banking Division and the Merchant Banking Division. We are a global team, based in Salt Lake City, with colleagues in New York, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
My group specializes in mitigating risks within the various communication channels used by people in the firm. We design surveillances to detect high-risk incidents and implement strategic measures to mitigate these risks. We do this by working with colleagues within the divisions who help disseminate policy on electronic communications to the people in the businesses.
One unique thing that I find with Goldman Sachs is how everyone around you is willing to help. Teamwork is important at the firm. I have always found people on my team who have the experience that can help guide me through whatever new project I may be working on.
I talk to my mentor regularly. The firm encourages everyone to find a mentor, both formal and informal. There are many people with whom you may work closely than your formal mentor who you can always go to for guidance — whether it's something specific about your job or another aspect of the firm.
Outside of work, most of my time is spent either on sports or traveling. I enjoy soccer, tennis, biking, snowboarding. Living in Salt Lake City provides easy access to the outdoors and opportunity to enjoy sports every season of the year. I also try to do one or two big international trips each year.
My interview advice to a candidate is to do your homework and be prepared. Be prepared to be challenged in your interviews and be prepared to be challenged in your career should you accept an offer at Goldman Sachs.
