Jonathan Executive Director/Vice President, Market Risk Management and Analysis Finance Division, Hong Kong
The most rewarding part of my job is to disseminate value-added risk information to trading managers and senior leaders in the firm to help them better understand the risk profile of the firm.
I work in the Finance division, on the Asia Market Risk Management & Analysis team, in Tokyo. We’re responsible for monitoring risk exposure and performing analysis on the firm’s trading and principal investing areas.
My role enables me to understand high-level trading and investing strategies employed by different businesses in the firm, so I am able to develop an all-round knowledge base of the industry. It also exposes me to technical training for analyzing portfolios with a wide range of financial products, including the most recently developed structured products.
My managers constantly encourage us to think of new ways to improve on existing processes and methodologies, giving us plenty of opportunities to come up with innovative solutions. In addition, as the firm expands and takes on risk in new areas, I believe there will be massive opportunities for my team to play a more important role to support the firm’s growth.
I am currently responsible for the risk monitoring function of the Asia Exotics business. Since the traditional risk management tools cannot depict the full range of risk factors of these products, I am working closely with the Risk Technology team and Desk Strategists in an effort to compute a more appropriate set of risk metrics for the business.
The primary task for my team is to “squeeze out” the important message behind the numbers to explain risk in an intuitive way. To do so, we need to process a large amount of data, understand the economics of each product, and discover relationships among them under different market conditions. This needs to be done in a fast-moving environment, particularly during market turbulence when requests from different businesses increase exponentially.
The most rewarding part of my job is to disseminate value-added risk information to trading managers and senior leaders in the firm to help them better understand the risk profile of the firm. I also find it very satisfying to provide an explanation of technical risk concepts in simple language to a large number of people in the firm.
I feel that the firm takes care of its employees very well in terms of both career development and personal well-being. The firm also has a very strong reputation in every area it does business in and therefore attracts a large pool of talented professionals to create a diverse and stimulating work environment.
