Ruth Executive Director/Vice President, Global Security Finance Division, Bengaluru
The firm has revealed how exciting and dynamic a role in this industry can be. It has shown me how many opportunities exist in the diverse business areas and that success is built through an ethic of hard work, teamwork and drive.
I am Operations Manager and Deputy Director of the EMEA Office of Global Security which means I am responsible for the operational coordination and delivery of security services. In particular, I deal with the provision of Business Assurance services for nonemployees throughout EMEA, the coordination of regional risk assessment and analysis and vendor management of security service providers in support of the Office of Global Security. My current role is with EMEA Risk in the Services division.
The majority of my work is team based but there is always a need to work alone and to be self-motivated and driven. Teamwork might mean taking part in a global, regional or local project across one or multiple divisions. One of the benefits of the Office of Global Security is that it is a small department with great reach. It gives you the ability to touch all aspects of the organization.
Outside of my normal scope of work, I have had the chance to be a part of several diversity initiatives such as setting up the Women’s Network in Moscow and being a member of the Accommodation and Accessibility Pillar on the Disability Forum.
I manage a small, but fantastic team that focuses on operational risk management for all aspects of security: risk assessment, crisis management, fire and life safety, security technology, business assurance, communications and finance.
Every day comes with new challenges and new problems to solve. One day might be spent sorting out issues concerning low-level security technology and the next we might have to deal with a major building safety issue.
My role has provided me with great opportunities in and out of London and across the Federation area of the Firm. I am consistently given stretch opportunities and have never been short of a challenge which has made my career here extremely interesting and exciting.
I was offered the opportunity to work for a Goldman Sachs vendor in Corporate Services and Real Estate. I was overwhelmed by the high caliber of people, great ethos, and the principles and culture that were embedded at Goldman Sachs and so I applied to the analyst program. I completed my training in New York and joined the Office of Global Security for one year, focusing on Operations and Crisis Management.
Following my assignment, I was offered a post in the Technology division on the Business Continuity team, which concentrated on business planning for any unexpected disruption to business. After a challenging two years I was lucky enough to be offered a stretch assignment as Security Manager in our new Moscow office. I returned to London in July 2008 to start my current role in London’s Office of Global Security.
After completing my degree in Art History and English Literature and a Master’s in Management and E-Commerce, I was uncertain as to what career path to take. Working in the corporate security field is something I could never have predicted in the days I spent studying Renaissance Art and Shakespeare. As someone from neither a mathematical nor economic background, I didn’t believe that the finance world would be accessible or of interest to me.
Goldman Sachs has certainly opened windows of opportunity that I would not have considered years ago. The firm has revealed how exciting and dynamic a role in this industry can be. It has shown me how many opportunities exist in the diverse business areas and that success is built through an ethic of hard work, teamwork and drive.
