Operational Impact
Responsible Waste and Supply Chain Managment

We continue our commitments to responsible waste management and sustainable procurement throughout our facilities operations, from the construction and occupancy of our spaces to the technology we deploy within them. 

The firm has been a member of CDP’s Supply Chain Program since 2011, which has enabled us to assess the environmental responsibility of our top suppliers in order to better understand the sustainability of our supply chain.

Where feasible, our global efforts include, but are not limited to:

  • Technology: Reusable bulk server packaging; e-waste recycling or re-purposing by ISO 14001-Certified Vendors; deploying remote access soft-tokens
  • Food: Sustainable purchasing and operations; recycling; composting
  • Paper and Print: Sustainable purchasing, recycling, print reduction (includes default duplex and secure printing, printer consolidation and transitioning to electronic statements)
  • Furniture/Technology/Office Supplies: Sustainable purchasing; reuse protocols
  • Travel: Use of eco-friendly cars and ferries; enhanced access to video conferencing in lieu of travel
  • Events: Use of water systems to reduce single water bottle usage, promoting use of electronic collateral materials, name tag recycling

Here are a few specific regional examples of our recent efforts:

Americas

  • Over 30 percent of food purchased is sustainable (sourced locally or certified sustainable) and we provide on-site access to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs.
  • 93 percent (approximately 234 gallons per month) of our used cooking oil is collected by a New York social enterprise, and converted to biodiesel fuel that is used by delivery vehicles in the New York tri-state area. 
  • Achieved 3-star certification from the Green Restaurant Association for environmentally responsible performance across seven categories.
  • We changed to one vendor to manage all of our waste removal for New York and New Jersey (wet trash, recycling, composting, etc.); the vendor diverts 100 percent of our waste collected from landfill. We currently recycle 45 percent of our waste, compost 7 percent and convert the balance to energy.
  • We introduced water systems in our client centers to further reduce our use of single-use water bottles. At our global headquarters, we estimate that annually we have eliminated 17,000 water bottles through this single action. Water systems are also utilized on our London campus.
  • Over the past three years, over 30 percent of the all car rides in the New York tri-state area have been in a hybrid vehicles; this is close to 300,000 rides in eco-friendly cars. Further, we introduced two public ferries, now servicing the route between our New York and New Jersey offices, that have the following environmental features: engineering designed to reduce engine sound, a 50 percent reduction in fuel consumption, reduced carbon emissions, the use of eco-friendly textiles and a unique seating arrangement to foster passenger collaboration/interaction.

Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)

  • All businesses in London (with the exception of two trading floors) and our Paris office had all desk bins removed and transitioned to centralized recycling, which typically doubles our recycling volumes and cuts disposal costs in half. Non-recycled waste, where possible, is sent to waste-to-energy facilities.
  • When moving our Paris office, furniture, appliances and kitchen goods were donated to Emmaus, a global charity network that works to transition people from homelessness by providing full-time work collecting, renovating and reselling donated furniture.
  • All meat served on the London campus is 100 percent British, 95 percent of all fresh produce comes from within an 80 mile radius, and none of the fish we procure is on the “endangered” list.

Asia Pacific

  • Introducing centralized waste and recycling bins in Tokyo last year helped to increase our recyclable waste by 12 percent.Quarterly “Operation Clean Up” activities are held to encourage waste cleanup and a healthy work environment through archiving, returning and recycling. As a result, in 2012, a total of 37.9 tons of waste paper was collected.
  • In moving to a new far site location as part of our Business Continuity Plan, furniture was reused for 250 seating positions, along with reused raised floor panels, circuit boards, and technology racks and bases.
