Through Goldman Sachs Gives, the firm and its senior employees have responded to natural and humanitarian disasters around the world, including earthquakes, flooding, severe weather and other humanitarian crises in Chile, China, Haiti, the Horn of Africa, India, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Syria, the United States, and most recently, following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Great East Japan Earthquake

Following the Japan earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, donations from the firm and Goldman Sachs Gives totaled over $9.5 million, with $3.5 million distributed within 10 days of the disaster.  Senior employees at Goldman Sachs also organized and funded a Goldman Sachs Gives Scholarship Program to support affected students at Tohoku Medical University, Tokyo University, Waseda University, and Kyoto University.  Employees from Goldman Sachs volunteered in relief and recovery efforts as well, rebuilding schools, shelters, homes and community centers devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.

Hurricane Sandy

Following Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, Goldman Sachs announced a $10 million commitment towards relief and recovery efforts.  This commitment included $5 million in donations from Goldman Sachs Gives to local nonprofit organizations and $5 million in loans to small businesses and homeowners impacted by the storm.

Beyond financial support, Goldman Sachs coordinated a strategic volunteer response to support local communities affected by the hurricane.  In November and December 2012, more than 1,200 Goldman Sachs people along with friends and family removed debris, distributed donated items, assembled care packages and assisted in other clean-up efforts.
