Goldman Sachs Asset Management Summit Convenes Global Leaders

13 MAY 2014 - LONDON - Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) recently hosted its inaugural EMEA Ideas Summit, with more than 40 leading CEOs, CIOs, policy-makers, political scientists and industry experts offering their perspectives on global themes shaping businesses, societies and the investment landscape today.

The GSAM EMEA Ideas Summit was attended by over two hundred and seventy clients and prospects, including investment consultants, third party distributors and leaders of some of the largest and most influential global asset owners, as well as high-net-worth clients. They had the opportunity to learn about themes including the macroeconomic landscape, geopolitics, leadership, Europe, emerging markets, real estate, energy, education and demographics.

Further highlights from the event included:

  • Mario Monti, former prime minister of Italy and Senator-for-Life of the Italian Republic, joined Francesco Garzarelli, co-head of European Macro Research, Global Investment Research, for a conversation on the future of Europe.
  • Former Head of MI5, Britain’s Security Service, Baroness Manningham-Buller and Former US Deputy Secretary of State, Ambassador John Negroponte, discussed the geopolitical risks facing the world today.
  • A panel on the new digital age featured Joanna Shields, chairman of Tech City and former managing director of Facebook in EMEA, and Niklas Zennström, co-founder of Skype, who outlined technology’s role in the future of business.
  • Mary Ellen Iskenderian, President of Women’s World Banking, highlighted the importance of women in developing nations being able to access credit to grow their businesses. A panel also examined the effect of empowering women in an economy.
  • Professor Sugata Mitra, 2013 TED prize winner for his vision of building a “School in the Cloud,” presented on the potential future of education with technology-enabled, self-directed education for children.
  • Gircilene Gilca de Castro, a graduate of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women, talking about the programme’s impact on her business in Brazil.
  • Sarah Harper, Professor of Gerontology at Oxford University, explained why falls in fertility in both developed and emerging markets will see the world’s population peak in coming decades, and outlined the societal impacts. Tristram Stuart, winner of The Sophie Prize, an international environmental award, also shared data on wasted food, calling for a more responsible use of global resources and highlighting some important investment implications.

During the event, participants sampled a range of products by Paul A Young chocolates and Love Smoothies - graduates of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme, which supports high growth small enterprise leaders across the UK.
