Mark Halperin and John Heilemann
Best-selling political journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, authors of the books Game Change and Double Down, discuss the impact of media on campaign decisions in the 2008 and 2012 US presidential elections.
Halperin, on interest in their political books: "We get asked all the time why people are interested in our books given how much political coverage there is," Halperin explained. "Part of the reason is that we are able to do what is so hard for any reporter to do now: to get close enough to the candidates, their families and the people closest to them to tell their story with empathy."
Heilemann, on covering candidates: "The flavor of who these candidates are is almost entirely drained from most of the media coverage of them. For consumers of the news or actual human beings who are going to make up their minds about who they're going to vote for, it would be better to have a clearer, fuller sense of the characters of these candidates rather than the very heavily choreographed, stage-managed, almost totally bloodless portraits that emerge from this situation of mutual suspicion."
