Jimmy Nelson: Preserving Culture Through Photography

Author and photographer Jimmy Nelson discussed documenting remote and unique cultures through photography in his book, Before They Pass Away.

On the significance of his photography subjects: “[The featured tribes] were chosen for their ability to inspire. They were chosen for their beauty. They were chosen for their dignity. They were chosen for their isolation. They were chosen for their culture. And most importantly, they were chosen for the nature and the environment in which they lived to give it a geographical palette of how beautiful the world still is with the cultures that live in it.”

On the lessons indigenous cultures can teach modern society: “When you get integrated into these communities and the photography is only the catalyst, it’s only the tip of the iceberg to what happens – you come across these profound cultural exchanges.”
