Katie Couric on Telling America’s Stories

Published on11 MAY 2018

Award-winning journalist Katie Couric discusses her trailblazing career and her latest work exploring some of the toughest issues facing the country in her new documentary series, America Inside Out.

On why she took the job as the first woman to solo anchor a network evening newscast (at CBS): “It's very important, the images [that television] projects, and it really does shape hearts and minds... I thought if I have an opportunity to be a strong, competent, capable woman and have young girls and young boys see that, perhaps I could break down some of these barriers that existed for women. And so that's why I did the job.”

On her new documentary series: “As we all know, the news cycle has become so instantaneous and accelerated with social media, with our phones permanently attached to our hands 24/7… And I thought, we’re living in such a fast-paced world… It’s almost impossible to keep up with things, and we don’t have an opportunity to step back and say, ‘Wait a second.’ We are going through such revolutionary changes – societal changes and really seismic shifts in so many different arenas.”
