Magic Johnson on “Over-Delivering” On and Off the Court

Published on24 FEB 2018

Earvin “Magic” Johnson has gone from hometown hero to basketball icon to entrepreneurial powerhouse and dedicated philanthropist. In this episode, Johnson discusses what he has learned along the way.

On what he learned from losing to NBA rival Larry Bird: “I'm looking at my rival celebrate, smile, and get champagne on his head, and then I'm crying in the locker room... Self-evaluation is the hardest thing you have to do. Taking a SWOT at yourself is the hardest thing you have to do. So I had to take a swat at myself and realized I wasn't as good as I thought I was. I had to go back and work and work.”

On achieving your mission in life: “My mission in life now is to affect change in urban America and to put people of color to work. That’s very important to me.”
