In 2005, we invested $8.2 million in The Kalahari, the largest mixed-income home ownership project in New York City history. Located in Harlem, the project is the result of an innovative partnership between private developers, New York State, and New York City.
Completed in 2008, the project was built to the US Green Building Council’s LEED Certification standards, using recycled materials and featuring a fresh-filtered air delivery system, Energy Star appliances and green roofs. It includes 249 for-sale residential units, 50 percent of which were sold to low- and moderate-income buyers, as well as 30,000 square feet of retail and 18,000 square feet of community space—the latter owned and operated by an after-school youth enrichment program.
