A Day in the Life

Here, I stretch myself
every day

Meet Danny

“Every day is dynamic, unpredictable and challenging, but above all it’s rewarding. My team oversees the day-to-day management of the Private Wealth business and helps to drive strategic initiatives that create value for our clients, shareholders and colleagues. Anything that touches our P&L—product offerings, client fees, employee compensation—is in our remit. We work in a constantly evolving industry and strive to develop innovative ways to address the problems of today, and anticipate the problems of tomorrow.”

Morning

o Brew a cup of coffee at home and ease into the morning

o Get to the office and prioritize my day

o Respond to emails that I received overnight from our colleagues in EMEA and Asia

Afternoon

o Lead a call with key stakeholders for an ongoing strategic project

o Analyze the fiscal impact of implementing a change to our pricing model

o Meet with my mentor

o Attend a Talks at GS session in the auditorium

Evening

o Review progress from the day and strategize on next steps

o Go to the gym

o Meet friends for dinner

When I’m not at my desk during the day…

I can likely be found in a conference room with colleagues, grabbing coffee with a mentor or brainstorming with my manager in his office. I also frequently use the onsite gym and take advantage of the free yoga classes and mindfulness sessions sponsored by the firm. Classes are hosted throughout the day, so it is easy to find a time that works best for my schedule. I prioritize having a healthy work/life balance, and part of that is making time not only for family and friends, but also for me.

Skills to be successful in my role…

Being proactive is key. Our team is expected to solve problems - almost like an internal consultant. This often requires us to dive deep into the complexities of a given topic, consult with relevant stakeholders, run analytics and ultimately deliver a well-informed recommendation.

Best advice I’ve received at GS…

There is no substitute for a good attitude, enthusiasm, and the desire to learn. A learning curve is inevitable but as long as you maintain a positive attitude and remain intellectually curious, you will continue to learn and develop.

How I’d describe my team dynamic…

Highly collaborative. Nothing is done in a vacuum. We are constantly bouncing ideas around and liaising with our counterparts in Operations, Controllers, Legal, and Compliance.

Who I am makes me better at what I do…

I am the team captain for one of Goldman Sachs’ recreational basketball teams, which includes colleagues from across the Consumer and Investment Management Division. I first joined the team in 2016 after moving to New York from our Los Angeles office – we didn’t win a single game. The next season I assumed the captaincy and recruited players much more talented than myself (always a good strategy!) – we ended up winning the championship. The lessons learned on the court can easily be transferred to the workplace. For example, how you react in the “heat of the moment” can be the difference between success and failure. If you are losing by 10 points but remain positive and constructive, there is a good chance that you will stage a comeback. It’s all about demonstrating a vision that people can rally behind.

Lunch go-to
I personally think we have some of the best cafeteria food around, but I also like other options in the neighborhood. I’ll typically go with one of the 3 S’: salad, sushi, or a sandwich.
