During my final year at school, I interned at an investment bank in Hong Kong and joined a global private equity firm after graduation. I joined Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division (MBD) in Beijing in 2015, which is the firm’s primary center for long-term principal investing activities. We invest both the firm’s capital and client capital across a range of asset classes, including corporate private equity and credit, real estate, and infrastructure assets.

My academic background helped form my analytical thinking and problem-solving skills that are relevant to the type of work I’m doing now in MBD. We look for investment opportunities, assess potential investment targets, interview management teams, conduct due diligence and analyze the industry and company’s performance. All of this requires a solid combination of technical and communication skills.

Our job is also about building relationships with entrepreneurs and management teams. At the end of the day it’s a people business, and I think that’s important for someone considering a career in MBD to know.

At Goldman Sachs, it's all about teamwork and global resources. Our MBD team in Beijing and Hong Kong covers China, Korea, Southeast Asia and Australia. We work as one team to develop views on potential investments quite often. We also cooperate with US and European teams when working with Chinese companies that may be looking to explore overseas acquisitions or when international companies are considering expansion in China. Goldman Sachs as a global financial services firm has vast resources across industries and regions for clients to leverage.

The best part of my job is being able to make an impact in the real world. I feel the investments we make can help companies grow and the economy to become stronger. As China’s economy continues to grow, diversify and mature, it provides us with significant opportunities to invest across a number of industries, including consumer, healthcare, finance, technology, real estate, and more. The diversity of our work is really exciting.

Sometimes, I perform magic during our team-building events. I also have helped organize the annual party for the Beijing office by working with other colleagues from all departments. The event is always great for fun and camaraderie.

Outside the office, I enjoy hiking in the mountains near Beijing, which is usually a 1-hour drive. I enjoy spending time with friends and family in the fresh air and scenery of suburbia.
