The Goldman Sachs Digital Innovators Research Program supports talented engineers in their exploration of the intersections of technology and financial services. With access to Goldman Sachs expertise, data and resources, participants are empowered to create value from their insights and discoveries.

We invite applications from curious engineers who are looking to build on financial services frameworks for commercially-oriented research projects. Participants are selected for a one-year term (September 2019 – August 2020) and receive wages, mentorship, access to APIs, and the opportunity to present their work to senior Goldman Sachs leaders.

This program is open to individuals who are authorized to work in the United States.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis by a committee of Goldman Sachs leaders. Proposals will be selected based on their novelty, commercial opportunity, feasibility, and the extent to which they utilize the Goldman Sachs platform, among other considerations.


Finalists will be notified by June 30, 2019. Participants will be named in July. The program begins in September 2019 and runs through August 2020.

Project proposals must be no longer than three pages (single spaced) and should answer the following questions:

  • What is the opportunity/problem space? What type of research will you undertake to address it?
  • Is there any pre-existing research in this area? (Please list sources, as applicable)
  • What are the expected outcomes? How would you suggest commercializing these outcomes? Are there any competing products or services on the market?
  • What does your research require? What expenses do you anticipate incurring?
  • What are the specific milestones you expect to reach during the one-year program period?
  • Are there any risks that you foresee?
  • What do you hope to get out of the program?


The core Goldman Sachs platform offers the following services:

  • Asset Service – provides reference data on securities and other instruments
  • Backtest Service – simulates systematic trading strategies using Goldman Sachs’ backtesting engines
  • Content Service – programmatically accesses Goldman Sachs’ research and market commentary
  • Data Service – retrieves Goldman Sachs’ proprietary market data and analytics, including volatility surfaces, investment research data, liquidity models, and more
  • Hedge Service – optimizes hedges on assets and portfolios given an objective and a set of constraints
  • Portfolio Service – creates portfolios of securities or other instruments and calculates historical risk and performance attribution metrics
  • Risk Service – performs distributed pricing and risk (delta, vega, etc.) calculations on assets and portfolios
  • Trade Idea service – creates trade ideas and tracks their performance in a hypothetical portfolio over time

The platform also includes GS Quant, a Python toolkit for quantitative finance. Created and maintained by quantitative developers at Goldman Sachs, GS Quant provides access to an extensive set of derivatives pricing data and includes libraries for time series analysis, derivative structuring and trading, portfolio manipulation, risk and scenario analysis, and backtesting.

GS Quant can be accessed programmatically from within core Goldman Sachs services, or as a standalone software package.

Develop interesting ways to visualize massive sets of historical and real-time financial data

Trading Strategy Environment
Build novel frameworks for developing, backtesting and executing quantitative trading strategies

Machine Learning/Research
Create knowledge graphs and algorithms for use in exploring datasets and uncovering unexpected connections and insights

Data Analytics
Construct dashboarding frameworks and other mechanisms to assist investors in monitoring Goldman Sachs insights and identifying opportunities

Create frameworks and applications that bring Goldman Sachs services and data to phones and tablets

Interested in another area of research? We’re ready to hear it!


  • Create a tool for browsing financial products and tracing securities as they evolve over time (for example, through mergers and other corporate actions)
  • Develop a recommendation engine that analyzes Goldman Sachs research, market data and investor behaviors to suggest trades
  • Build a toolkit for developing mobile applications that access the Goldman Sachs platform


Who is the program intended for?
The GS Digital Innovators Research Program is open to all applicants, but is focused on top-performing students completing their undergraduate or graduate programs by August 2019.

Is the program full-time?
Yes. Participants are expected to pursue their research full-time. Exceptions may be granted for limited academic appointments and teaching arrangements; please contact for more details.

What types of projects are you looking for?
We are open to research in multiple areas. See above for Research Themes and Sample Projects for suggestions.

Can I apply if I’m not currently a student?

Can I apply if I’m not based in the United States?
The 2019-2020 Digital Innovators Research Program is limited to individuals who are authorized to work in the United States. We are considering expansion to other countries in the future.

Can I apply if I’m currently employed?
Yes, but your employment must end before the program begins in September 2019.

Will I be an employee of Goldman Sachs?
No. You will be engaged as a contractor for a one-year term.

Are expenses reimbursable? What types of expenses are eligible?
Yes, you may receive reimbursement for necessary computing hardware, additional datasets beyond those provided by Goldman Sachs, required travel, and the like. Reimbursements are subject to approval and limits determined by Goldman Sachs.

Where will my work take place? Will I be located at a Goldman Sachs office? Will I have access to Goldman Sachs equipment?
You are expected to work at your own off-site location, using your own equipment (potentially eligible for reimbursement, as noted above).

What happens at the end of the program?
At the end of the program, you will be invited to present the results of your research to a group of senior Goldman Sachs leaders for feedback and recommendations of next steps.

Am I allowed to publish the results of research I conduct during the program?
Possibly, depending on the nature of your work. Any publication of research is subject to review and approval by Goldman Sachs.

Who owns intellectual property developed during the program?
All intellectual property belongs to Goldman Sachs, but may be shared with or assigned to participants on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the firm.

Can I apply for both the Digital Innovators Research Program and a full-time position at Goldman Sachs?
