In this episode of Talks at GS, professional basketball player Kevin Love discusses his struggles with mental health, his work to empower others to overcome their own challenges, and the impact of coronavirus on professional sports.
On the importance of early intervention in helping young people overcome mental health challenges: “There has to be some sort of early intervention because the brain is changing at such a rapid rate and you’re susceptible to change that when it comes out as a general response, it’s way, way past that time. So, we have to find ways to—and we’re doing it at the Love Fund—to research and to intervene at an earlier age because I think that’s where you have the biggest impact.”
On his work to help the Cleveland Cavaliers community during the pandemic: “[The arena workers are] a huge part of our story. We’re on a first name basis with a lot of them. We see them maybe more than our own immediate family that live somewhere else. So, I felt it was very important to take care of them and consider them during this time because they don’t know when the next paycheck is coming. They don’t know if they’re going to be able to put food on the table and that stress, that anxiety, that unknown is what makes this time extremely tough to navigate, and not knowing what’s going to come the next day or what it’s going look like in a month or six months is really tough.”
