Catch-Up With David: with Goldman Sachs’ Head of Global Consumer Business Harit Talwar

Published on13 MAY 2019

In this episode of Catch-Up With David, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon sits down with the firm’s Head of Global Consumer Business, Harit Talwar, to discuss what it’s like building a startup within a 150-year-old institution, his views on disruption within consumer financial services and what it’s like to work across different countries and cultures.

Talwar talks about what it was like to launch the firm’s first-ever consumer offering --Marcus by Goldman Sachs--a digital storefront that aims to give consumers more control over their finances.  In terms of building a startup within a longstanding institution, Talwar explains some of the advantages, as well as the challenges. “Unlike a small startup, we don’t have the freedom and flexibility to just do a beta product test or be less than perfect in our marketing. Our execution standard expectations by the broad stakeholder community, both within the firm and outside the firm, are very high, which sometimes in a startup is challenging, but I think it’s the flip side of having a great brand, and so we would rather take that challenge.”
