Made in the USA… or China?

Potential shifts in US trade policy threaten to upend 25 years of investment in global supply chains. But what would it take to move manufacturing back to the United States from China?  Goldman Sachs Research analysts Mark Delaney and Lindsay Drucker Mann explore the costs and challenges through a look at two products with global appeal: smartphones and apparel.    

So bottom line, can smartphones be manufactured in the United States? We think it’s possible, but we think it would take about five years in order to set up the supply chain, including setting up new factories and finding and training new employees.
