Working in an accounting field, I am constantly problem solving– and at Goldman Sachs, I help to sort through challenges, and move forward solutions. I’ve always enjoyed puzzles; and that is a big part of why I’ve enjoyed my role. Thinking critically about what we can do to make our processes and workflows better is satisfying. I am thankful for my undergraduate degrees in finance and accounting; however, I have found that you don’t need a certain major to find a home here. Your managers are committed to setting you up for success.
In Controllers, I’m able to see a holistic view of the firm. I speak with people across businesses to understand their products, workflows, and viewpoints. I get to learn from subject matter experts and formulate a comprehensive view of the firm’s positioning.
I support Capital Analysis, Plans and Reporting. More specifically, I work on a team that attributes firm capital across business lines based on regulatory requirements. Our team’s goals are to ensure the firm is meeting its regulatory capital requirements and help the firm best manage its capital committing activities. We project capital as part of the firmwide budget, which provides management with analysis essential to managing the firm’s capital levels.
I find the work very rewarding. Over the past couple of years, I’ve witnessed my colleagues care and dedication to their work. I’ve always wanted to position myself to learn – that’s why I applied. Now, I stay because of the people. Our culture provides the opportunity for continuous growth – learning from both peers and leadership.
Find something you’re interested in and hit the ground running. Being open to new experiences can be powerful especially early in your career. I’ve only been in my current role for a year, and I’ve switched locations three times. Your first career doesn’t have to be your end-all, be-all, but will be a great place to start. If you commit to working hard, learning and building your network, you might discover new opportunities and roles at Goldman Sachs.
