I joined the firm as an associate in 2010. In my role, I help oversee the day to day risk management efforts within GS Bank USA and the Consumer and Commercial Banking Division, which now includes Marcus by Goldman Sachs®. My team is responsible for gathering information that helps assess the risk profile of those businesses as well as the risk appetite of the firm.
My career path to Goldman wasn’t exactly a straight line; but, once I was hired, I quickly felt like part of the team. After graduating with a Finance degree, I had my heart set on pursuing a career as a research analyst. However, my first job was working for an investment firm as a portfolio analyst which involved researching portfolio performance. After that, I worked as a market risk analyst focusing on pension funds and alternative asset classes for clients. When the opportunity to join Goldman Sachs came along, I thought it would be a role where I could grow and develop my technical skills and product knowledge.
When I joined the firm, I had some solid technical skills; but I needed to get a deeper understanding of my business and asset coverage, especially around valuations and metrics. I was provided with various learning tools and surrounded by people that were smart, motivated and willing to teach me. My manager encouraged me to utilize training sessions offered by Goldman Sachs University and I found these to be valuable resources.
A core part of the firm’s culture is consensus-building. While working on the startup phase of Marcus by Goldman Sachs® and on other processes and projects that extend to the broader firm, any decisions I’ve made have been through working with others and seeking the opinions of people across various levels.
I participate in the firm’s recruiting efforts for the Risk Division by sharing my experiences of working in the financial services industry and discussing the benefits of joining Goldman with students. For someone coming out of school and looking at the Risk Division as a place to start, I think it provides a bird’s eye view of the firm and solid training in both technical and soft skills.
Outside of work, I enjoy long distance running, which include marathons and half- marathons. I also help organize a runner’s club within my division.
