I work on the equity electronic trading desk covering institutions trading low-touch options, cash equities and synthetic equities. We support clients using Goldman Sachs Electronic Trading’s (GSET) platform, which consists of a full suite of algorithms, execution analytics, global market access, and provide real-time execution coverage. We provide clients with the tools and market structure knowledge to implement their investment views. On a day-to-day basis, I analyze execution performance, suggest customizations to fit unique investment objectives and cross-sell different products within our offering based on our clients’ needs.
We work as a team to support our clients. Due to the quantitative nature of our desk, we work closely with the different equities strats groups, who work to develop, customize, and further improve our execution logic and analytical tools for our clients. We also collaborate with our colleagues in Operations, Technology, and Global Compliance to ensure that clients’ experiences are seamless from initial introduction, to the first trade and through trade settlement. In order to expand what we can deliver to clients, we regularly interact with other teams such as Prime Brokerage, the Synthetic Products Group, and the GS Marquee team.
The internship program allowed me to experience many different desks and products within the Global Markets Division and gave me a clear picture of what I wanted to do after I graduated. Ultimately, I was drawn to the electronic trading desk because of the combination of commercial interactions and quantitative analysis.
In college I was a Public Health major. After deciding that I didn’t want to go to medical school, I was drawn to the fast pace and competitive nature of Sales and Trading. Being a life-long athlete, a work environment filled with team-oriented and hard-working individuals was exactly what I wanted. Similar to my experience playing lacrosse for a Division 1 school in college, every day is different in the Global Markets Division. In this role, there is very little predictability and I am constantly being challenged, which is something I really enjoy.
Mentoring has played a huge part in my career. The firm assigns each analyst official mentors who are outside of his or her business unit. I find it very important to have mentors both within your group as well as outside your day-to-day job responsibilities. I have people on my team who I can turn to and I also have mentors outside of my business unit where I feel comfortable asking candid questions as they arise.
Because mentoring has had such a positive influence on my career, I decided to mentor an intern this past summer. This experience was extremely rewarding, as I was recently in her shoes and was able to connect with her and help her get the most out of her experience. I was ecstatic when she received a full-time offer at the end of the year! We’ll definitely stay in touch as she begins her career at the firm.
