In this episode of Talks at GS, Cori “Coco” Gauff discusses her breakthrough season in the Women’s Tennis Association, her views on the future of women’s tennis and how she is using her platform to speak out on issues related to racial equity.
On speaking out on issues related to racial equity: “I think people need to understand that this issue isn’t a Black or white issue, it’s an everyone against racism issue. And people need to understand that you don’t have to be Black or a person of color to support Black Lives Matter. You can also just be an ally — that is strength in numbers. When you see someone of your skin color participating, then maybe your friend will say, ‘Hey, maybe I can jump into this.’ And it starts a conversation.”
On why she has looked up to Venus and Serena Williams: “I think it was cool for me to see them be not only so powerful on the court, but also off the court. As we all know, they are pioneers for the game and helped change the game. And I think that was also inspiring for me and they still inspire me now.”
