New York University President John Sexton discusses the evolution and globalization of higher education.
On the evolution of globalization: “The miniaturization of the world is either going to lead to this clash of civilizations that is written about, or we’re going to learn to build a new kind of community, a community of communities, like the elements of a watch; they connect and make a whole that’s greater than the sum of the parts.”
On the responsibility of leadership: “I’ve got to do everything through what I call evocative leadership…it’s hard, but when you’re given the right to try to shape [an] institution, it’s a great privilege.”
TALKING WITH...JOHN SEXTON
What was your first job?
My first job was my beach chair business at the age of 11 in Rockaway Beach, NY.
What person do you admire the most?
My wife. She taught me more than anyone I’ve ever met about what is important and how to live a good and fulfilling life.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A high school teacher of mine had a phrase that was meant to impart a way of living: “Play another octave on the piano. If there are notes you haven’t touched, if there are foods you haven’t tasted, if there’s music you haven’t heard, a place you haven’t been – as long as it’s legal and moral, do it once.”
