Our Emissions Reductions Strategy

Our strategy focuses on key opportunities across our operations and supply chain. We work to integrate climate science in our emissions measurement, thereby enhancing the accuracy of carbon accounting methodologies. This approach allows us to identify the most impactful emissions reduction opportunities across all scopes, including actively supporting our vendors, who are independently working to reduce their emissions, and lowering our Scope 3 supply chain footprint.

There are various external factors that influence the trajectory of emissions reductions across our operations and supply chain, including the state of public policy, market dynamics, and technological innovation. We have reduced our operational emissions by 53% from 2009 through 2024. Given this progress, we are evolving our strategy and goals for emissions reductions in our operations and supply chain to efficiently allocate resources toward initiatives that drive the greatest value and impact.

Our Operations

As a firm, we have been on a journey to minimize our impact on the environment since 2005. Increasing energy efficiency in our buildings is paramount to our decarbonization efforts. We reduce energy consumption by targeting LEED Gold certification or equivalent across our global portfolio. As we plan, design and construct new workplaces, we implement low carbon strategies and sustainable designs that reduce energy use, carbon emissions and potable water consumption and continuously evaluate opportunities for operational efficiencies.

We also source electricity equivalent to 100% of our global consumption from renewable sources. Our goal to source 80% renewable electricity through long-term, impactful agreements, is helping to bring new renewable electricity capacity to the grid in key locations.

Our Supply Chain

Engaging with our vendors is central to addressing our Scope 3 supply chain emissions and supporting their decarbonization goals. Nearly 55% of our supply chain emissions are covered by vendors that have set their own decarbonization goals6. We maintain ongoing dialogue with these vendor partners about their progress and challenges in achieving their goals. Additionally, we identify vendor partners seeking to begin or progress their decarbonization journey, offering tools and resources to do so.

6 Supplier decarbonization goals may include net zero, carbon neutral, renewable energy, supply chain engagement, absolute and intensity emissions reduction goals, and targets.

Carbon Credits

Globally, we remain focused on our operations and supply chain decarbonization efforts. We recognize that a portion of operational and business travel emissions cannot be eliminated through reduction strategies and will require offsetting with high-quality carbon credits. In 2015, we first completely offset our unabated operational and business travel emissions using third-party verified carbon credits, and have continued each year since.

The firm reviews its operations and supply chain strategy on a periodic basis. Considerations including public policy, market dynamics, technological innovation, among others, are assessed on an on-going basis to align with best practices and other dynamic external factors. Read more on our progress in our latest Sustainability Report
