WASHINGTON, DC – MARCH 18, 2024 – Women’s Basketball 2023 Champion, Final Four Most Outstanding Player and star senior forward Angel Reese has teamed up with Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women (OMBW) to amplify the voices of Black women to policy makers in Washington. The partnership comes after a new national survey from OMBW focused on economic mobility that shares the hurdles Black women face in pursuit of generational wealth building.
To highlight the barriers impacting Black women’s ability to leave a financial legacy for their families, Reese appears alongside her mother, former college basketball player Angel Webb Reese, in a new national TV ad which opens with Angel highlighting the traits she inherited from her mom, setting the scene for a powerful message to Congress.
The ad was written, produced and directed by Maura Chanz and ColorCreative, a Black women-owned and run management company focused on supporting and developing the voices of women and BIPOC creators. The ad can be viewed here.
While Reese has been a major figure in prior name, image and likeness (NIL) campaigns, this is her first such advocacy-focused deal. The ad will run on ESPN and Connected TV during the Elite Eight and Final Four games at the end of March Madness.
“I owe so much to my mom. She instilled in me my confidence, work ethic and my commitment to my community. It’s clear that from her generation to today, Black women are still facing challenges,” said Angel Reese. “But I believe change is possible. I’m proud to be teaming up with Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women to make sure the voices of Black women in my community and across the country are heard.”
Reese and her mother join Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center, and Hall of Fame Coach Dawn Staley as OMBW partners advocating for public policy change to help narrow the opportunity gap for Black women.
“I’m proud to see Angel using her platform to level the playing field for Black women and talking about these important issues. My hope is that these statistics and the real-life experiences that they represent will be a wake-up call for Congress and other leaders to work with Black women to create a future where everyone has an opportunity to achieve their goals and leave a legacy,” said Angel Webb Reese, retired basketball player and Angel Reese’s mom.
The ad campaign is part of OMBW’s efforts to use data to highlight the roadblocks that impact the economic futures of Black women and their families, but also hinders broader economic growth. According to a 2021 OMBW research report Black Womenomics: Investing in the Underinvested, policies that close the earnings gap for Black women would raise the overall level of U.S. annual GDP growth by between 1.4-2.1% each year, or $300-450 billion.
“Listening to Black women has been at the center of our work with One Million Black Women from the start, and through our public policy initiative and national surveys, we’re able to share their feedback directly with policy makers,” said Jessica Taylor, national director of One Million Black Women at Goldman Sachs. “Angel is a leader on and off the court, and we’re proud to partner with her on OMBW to help amplify the voices of Black women.”
