Our Operational Impact

Minimizing our operational impact is a prerequisite of sound environmental policy and a necessary complement to our core business activities.

Managing our impact on our environment and community is central to how we operate and a key part of our sustainability strategy. Having been carbon neutral1 across our operations and business travel since 2015, we expanded our ambition in 2021 to achieve net zero carbon emissions in our operations and supply chain by 2030.

1Goldman Sachs has achieved carbon neutrality across operations and business travel through a mixture of reduction efforts and purchase of energy attribute certificates and carbon offsets. For more information, visit our third-party verification statement and our Operational Impact page below.

Our 2025 Operational Goals

As a firm, we have been on a journey to minimize our impact on the environment since 2005. We have held ourselves accountable and set challenging goals, ensuring that our workplaces and facilities utilize smart, sustainable solutions. In addition to seeking LEED certification for all new buildings, we certify all our operationally controlled workplaces to ISO 14001, and all our onsite events to ISO 20121 and we source renewable electricity equivalent to 100% of our global consumption.

Our 2025 goals aim to further improve our performance across a range of areas, including energy management and direct renewable electricity sourcing.

Our Journey to Net Zero Carbon by 2030

We have been carbon neutral across our operations and business travel since 2015.  In 2021, we expanded our operational carbon neutrality commitment with a goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions in our operations and supply chain by 2030.

Since then, we have revised our carbon accounting methodology, which includes leveraging a third-party technology solution, and have conducted a detailed assessment across our footprint to better understand key emission sources. Our measurement approach incorporates the latest climate science, increases the accuracy of our reported emissions, and enables the integration of more advanced carbon calculations. We are using this technology to help us identify the most impactful emissions reduction opportunities across all scopes, including Scope 3 supply chain emissions, which we seek to reduce in partnership with our vendors.

Responsible Sourcing & Supply Chain Management

As we manage our operations sustainably, we seek to also develop an inclusive and responsible supply chain that embodies these same commitments. We look for vendors who share our commitment to environmental stewardship, labor and human rights accords, ethical business practices and diversity and inclusion.
