For the third consecutive summer, Women in Engineering at Goldman Sachs partnered with Kode With Klossy to sponsor one of their two-week camps in New York City. Kode With Klossy hosts coding camps for students aged 13 to 18 worldwide, to further learning opportunities and engage young women and gender expansive youth in both coding and computer science. This past July, the camp Goldman Sachs sponsored in New York hosted 32 scholars.
Goldman Sachs’ Christine Smyth, co-head of the Americas Women in Engineering Network, opened the program – welcoming participants by providing perspective on Goldman Sachs engineering while emphasizing the importance of women’s involvement in STEM.
During the program, in addition to the coding skills taught by Kode With Klossy instructional leaders, participants learned from people across the business, including a panel of Analyst and Associates as well as engineers on the trading floor. The discussion emphasized the importance of acquiring transferable skills valuable in STEM studies, like critical thinking and problem-solving and touched on the challenges faced by women in STEM, like dealing with imposter syndrome. The participants were happy to receive advice on resiliency, networking, comparison, and more, applying as many skills and lessons as possible throughout their summer camp and beyond.
The scholars also participated in a “Pitch Party,” an open forum allowing the students to pitch project ideas to Goldman Sachs mentors who shared constructive feedback in return. The program attendees received hands-on assistance from women engineers at the firm who helped them debug HTML, CSS, and JavaScript issues for their respective projects.
At the end of the program, the scholars presented their final projects to each other, teachers, parents, and Goldman Sachs mentors. Each scholar received a certificate at the end of the program, concluding their two-weeks with celebratory refreshments and congratulations all around.
