Michael Carr Obituary

Michael John Carr, 68, of New York City, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on March 13, 1958, to Richard and Helen Carr, Michael lived a life defined by integrity, generosity, and deep devotion to those he loved.

After attending Choate Rosemary Hall, Michael earned his bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University in 1980 and went on to receive his MBA from The Wharton School in 1985.

Michael's finance career was marked by exceptional leadership and trusted counsel. He joined Goldman Sachs as a partner in 1998 from Salomon Smith Barney. From 2000 to 2004, he was based in Hong Kong, where he led the firm’s advisory business across Asia outside Japan, before returning to New York to oversee the industrials and natural resources group. In 2011, he became head of Americas Mergers & Acquisitions, and in 2015 was appointed global co-head of M&A.

Michael was also deeply committed to education and service. Among his philanthropic pursuits, he also faithfully served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Choate Rosemary Hall for 8 years, offering thoughtful leadership and steadfast support to the school community he cherished.

Above all, Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and extraordinary colleague. He possessed boundless generosity, moral courage, and the ability to make others feel valued and understood. His enormous heart and sense of humor and joy brought warmth to every room he entered.

Michael found great happiness in cheering for the New York Giants, skiing the steepest mountains, traveling through Italy, listening to the Grateful Dead, and most of all, spending time with his family and his beloved goldendoodle, Cricket.

He is survived by his wife, Shelley, his daughters, Alexandra and Elisabeth, and his sons-in-law, Nick Ribovich and Alec Dunn, all of whom were the center of his life and his greatest source of pride.
