Kathryn Ruemmler to Step Down as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel
This afternoon, Kathy Ruemmler came to me to submit her resignation as chief legal officer and general counsel of Goldman Sachs. I accepted her resignation and respect her decision.
As chief legal officer and general counsel, Kathy has overseen Legal, Compliance, the Conflicts Resolution Group, and the Office of Regulatory Relations, and in that capacity she has helped enhance our control functions across the firm, while refining and improving our organizational structure. Her emphasis on cross-discipline collaboration has helped Goldman Sachs address a number of key issues proactively and effectively, including in the context of the firm’s regulatory agenda. She will work with our teams over the coming months to effect a smooth transition, which will be effective June 30.
Kathy has been a highly effective and thoughtful advisor to our senior leaders across the firm, and she has demonstrated a deep knowledge of the broader legal and regulatory environment.
Kathy joined the firm in 2020, first serving as global head of Regulatory Affairs before assuming her current role. Prior to that, Kathy had a long career in policy development, regulatory and agency enforcement matters, and corporate governance, including serving as counsel to President Barack Obama. Prior to serving in the White House, Kathy was principal associate deputy attorney general at the Department of Justice. She worked closely with the attorney general and the deputy attorney general in the overall management and supervision of the Department of Justice, including the United States Attorney’s Offices. Kathy joined Goldman Sachs from Latham & Watkins, LLP, where she served as global chair of the White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice and a partner in the Litigation & Trial Department.
Kathy has been an extraordinary general counsel, and we are grateful for her contributions and sound advice on a wide range of consequential legal matters for the firm. As one of the most accomplished professionals in her field, Kathy has also been a mentor and friend to many of our people.
Please join me in thanking Kathy for her dedication and service as chief legal officer and general counsel to the firm.
