In Memory of Sir Alex Younger
It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of our dear colleague Sir Alex Younger yesterday.
Sir Alex served as an international advisor to the firm, and was previously chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. He joined Goldman Sachs in 2021 to advise on strategic matters and help our clients worldwide better understand the environment in which they operate.
Over the last five years, Sir Alex made significant contributions to the firm and our franchise, acting as a trusted advisor to our leaders, businesses, and teams around the world. His background gave him unique and invaluable insight on geopolitics, the disruptive effects of emerging technologies, cyber and digital resilience, crisis management, and the challenges of leading and transforming a complex and risk-bearing global organization, among many other topics. Sir Alex was not only an outstanding leader and brilliant thinker, but also a wonderful and kind colleague. His guidance and counsel will be greatly missed – our people, clients, and countless others who had the pleasure of interacting with him deeply appreciated learning from him.
Prior to retiring from the British government in 2020, Sir Alex served as chief of the British Secret Intelligence Service for six years – the longest-serving MI6 chief in 50 years – and worked as a foreign intelligence professional for 30 years. Sir Alex was knighted in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honors list for his service to national security.
Sir Alex leaves a remarkable legacy of public service, and was deeply committed to his country. In parallel, his wisdom, leadership, and significant contributions at Goldman Sachs will have a lasting impact on our people, our culture, and our clients.
Please join us in extending our deepest condolences to Sir Alex’s wife, Sarah, and their entire family.

Russell Horwitz to Retire From Goldman Sachs
Russell Horwitz, chief of staff of the firm and a member of the Management Committee, will retire from the partnership, effective at the end of June. We are pleased that Russell will become an advisory director at that time, and look forward to his continued engagement with the firm and our people in this capacity.
During his 19 years of service at Goldman Sachs, Russell has held several senior leadership roles. His many contributions, working with leaders across all of our divisions during periods of significant change for both our firm and the industry, will have a lasting impact. We have benefitted greatly from his incisive perspectives and thoughtful counsel on a wide range of consequential issues for Goldman Sachs, our clients, and our people around the world.
Over the last three years since rejoining Goldman Sachs, Russell has overseen the operations of the Executive Office, including corporate communications, government and regulatory affairs, and corporate engagement. He also worked closely with the teams responsible for investor relations and marketing. Always operating with a strong emphasis on the importance of remaining anchored in the firm’s long-term objectives, Russell has played a critical role in helping each of these groups advance their mission – from fiercely protecting Goldman Sachs’ reputation and making meaningful investments in our people’s experience, to actively engaging on the regulatory and policy agenda in different jurisdictions.
Throughout his career, Russell has been deeply committed to supporting our people and advancing Goldman Sachs’ culture, wholeheartedly embracing what makes Goldman Sachs such an extraordinary organization and encouraging everyone around him to lean into the ways of working and values that truly differentiate the firm. He has sponsored several initiatives designed to help colleagues gain a deeper understanding – and broader perspective – of the firm, with a particular emphasis on cross-divisional dialogue and collaboration.
Russell first joined Goldman Sachs in 2004, and was named managing director in 2008 and partner in 2012. He rejoined the firm in 2023.
Please join us in thanking Russell for his many contributions to Goldman Sachs, and in wishing him and his family the very best for the future.
