NEW YORK, February 2, 2004 -- The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) today announced that Alan Cohen will join the firm as Global Head of Compliance. In that role, he will lead Goldman Sachs’ compliance group worldwide, working closely with senior management, leadership within the businesses and the firm’s other control functions. He will report to the Executive Office and become a member of the firm’s Management Committee.

Mr. Cohen joins Goldman Sachs from O’Melveny & Myers, where he has been a partner since 1991. Before that, Mr. Cohen spent nine years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. His last assignment was as the Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. In private practice, he has represented a wide variety of public and private companies and financial institutions. In addition, Mr. Cohen has been appointed by the United States District Court as a receiver in a number of important regulatory enforcement actions involving complex financial fraud.
