From frontend engineering to building trading platforms, my path to Goldman Sachs started with curiosity. I studied Computer Science at the University of St Andrews. My first role was as a Java Developer at another bank, but I found frontend engineering far more exciting. The technology was evolving fast and the problems were interesting, so I made that my focus. That specialism led me to Goldman Sachs, who were looking for a UI engineer to work on a new RFQ platform for equity derivatives. Financial services was never the plan, but the problems are genuinely hard, the people are exceptional, and that combination is what keeps me here.
One of the defining turning points in my career was the move from London to Birmingham. After three years in London, I relocated to help build out our equity derivatives engineering team in a brand-new office. I saw enormous potential in being part of something from the ground up, and that instinct proved right. The momentum we have now is remarkable, the team is growing, the work is increasingly ambitious, and we have built a close-knit engineering community where the size of the office means you genuinely know people across every part of the firm. You do not get that everywhere, and it is something I value deeply.
Engineers at Goldman Sachs own the systems they build and are trusted to evolve them to keep the firm competitive. In my team's case, we build and run the platform that our equity trading desks use to respond to tens of thousands of client requests every day. When we ship something, it is live in front of our traders the same day, and the feedback is immediate. We built our equity derivatives hedging platform from the ground up here in Birmingham, and it has grown into critical infrastructure for trading desks across our equities business. Beyond that, Birmingham has become a real centre for AI within the firm, we have built a vibrant community of engineers who are experimenting, learning, and pioneering AI-assisted engineering. The technology is transforming our industry, and it is exciting to be at the forefront of that change.
What I value most about my role is the autonomy. We are responsible for our platform and we decide where to take it, both for the challenges we face today and those we anticipate years from now. To be successful here, you need to think clearly, act decisively, and care about the details, the kind of engineer who takes genuine pride in getting things right. Goldman Sachs empowers you to introduce new ideas, own complex systems, and progressively sharpen your skills in an environment that demands excellence. The most rewarding part for me has been watching the team in Birmingham grow: engineers gaining confidence, taking on bigger challenges, and developing into people who can independently own and drive the platforms that power our business. If you want to solve genuinely hard problems alongside exceptional people, this is the place to be.
